Most wealthy nations, along with 17 states, and several cities within Minnesota already require sick and safe leave for employees. Minnesota will be added to the statewide list on January 1, 2024. Many businesses have already been voluntarily providing benefits that are equal or greater than those that are required. For other businesses this will be a new employee benefit. Those businesses face several short-term challenges and concerns including administrative tracking, increased costs, and labor uncertainties.  Long term, some research shows economic benefit to these policies including decline in labor turnover, increase in labor supply, and increase in operating profit; however that won’t diminish the short-term risks. Now is the time to engage with your Kraus-Anderson human resource and benefit consultants along with your payroll company to make certain that you are ready for the implementation.
